About ACT/CBTIn our practice ACT and CBT are the most commonly used therapeutic approaches based on their proven efficacy.
ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) is the most modern and effective evidence-based psychological therapy approach to treat depression, anxiety, grief and other psychological problems. ACT is an active type of treatment which means it requires the client to engage, reflect and practice skills at home. ACT offers practical strategies that can be practised. The ultimate goal of ACT is to develop 'psychological' flexibility. This is the ability to be in the present moment, with awareness and openness, and take action, guided by your values. In other words, it's the ability to be present, open up, and do what matters. The greater your ability to be present, open up and do what matters, the greater your quality of life - the greater your sense of vitality, well-being and fulfilment. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is the most familiar approach to treat psychological problems. This approach is slightly different to ACT but as effective. CBT has a strong focus on the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. The more you become familiar with the chain reactions and their triggers, the more you can change your response to your thoughts and experienced emotions. In our practice we will advise you about the different options for treatment based on our experience and your existing problem coping skills, personality traits and personal needs. |
What happens in therapy? |
During your sessions our clinical psychologist Selma van Diest will assess your situation and your challenges and will share what she thinks would be helpful to work on to improve your situation or concerns. In the sessions Selma will explain to you the different psychological techniques that will help you overcome your challenge or see things from a different perspective. She will take you through the specific strategies and will, most of the time, give you some 'homework'. This can vary from thinking about what has been discussed, being aware of your experiences between the sessions or try to practice a new skill. Selma is highly trained in all psychological approaches and in how to connect with you to understand your needs.
